rolling with monocle and globe

It sure is nice when you get to combine 3 of your great loves all in one day. For me that was the kind of day in July that produced another great shoot with Monocle. They were sending me to Globe Bikes in Morgan Hill near Santa Cruz to go shoot a story on the new Globe commuter line. Globe is a Specialized bike company. I’ve been riding Specialized for 15 years now so you can imagine how thrilled I was being sent off to a child’s equivalent of a candy store. It was a whirlwind of a day with a ton of shots to be done at headquarters and in town. But with bikes, images and good people on my side, I was feeling lucky.

Globe bikes are perfect for running around going to the farmers market, being a hipster in skinny or as we like to call them ‘drainpipe’ jeans with your U lock in your back pocket, going to the community garden, going to work, going to the dentist, whatever. Perfect solution to get you out of your car, release you from the dread of another late train or bus commute, help get the air cleaner and your buns and calves harder. Personally I’m the Vienna or the Roll.

The story is out in the Sept issue of Monocle which is on the newstands now. And surprisingly it looks a lot like this…

You can even read it online which is great in it’s multimedia approach to it’s online version. Here’s the splash page on the Globe piece.

Now roll along now to pick up your issue of Monocle. The cover you’re looking for looks like this.

Many thanks to everyone at Specialized who helped make my job a little easier and also to my editors Poppy in London for offering me the story and Ann Marie in New York who spent the day with me, wrote a great story and was fabulous company.

and for those of you interested in seeing some that landed on the cutting room floor..

monocle and me

When I got the call one day in April from London to shoot for Monocle, I jumped all over it. Yes I’d been waiting for them to call for a while. It was one of those ” can you shoot it for us tomorrow and have the pics for us to look at in London the following morning”. Seems like there’s a lot of that in publishing. The job required me to plain and simple go and shoot the new terminal at Mineta San Jose Intl Airport here in California. The photo editor was expecting a nice brand spanking new terminal and what I found was a half finished construction site. I had to pick my way around some angles to disguise it, make it look all shiny and new. I think I managed alright except when I quite deliberately didn’t try to. I donned a hard hat and a bright orange jacket given to be by the those in charge and off I went around the place free to roam. The thing that bugged me about this building was the failure to implement any solar panels in the design. For a city that gets on average 300 days of sunshine a year I thought that was quite odd and more than a little annoying. Here’s the article and a few of my outtakes.
