The June issue of San Francisco Magazine features a shoot I did with Duggan McDonnell, co founder of Cantina one of the city’s most popular cocktail havens. This was a great shoot, my first with Alejandro Chavetta, San Francisco magazine’s Art Director. McDonnell was an easy subject arriving full of Californian enthusiasm and ready to show off his new Pisco (a peruvian liquor) which will be in stores this month. We shot at Cask a high end liquor store in downtown San Francisco, a veritable candy store for the liquor connoisseur. We also shot in the Tenderloin district where McDonnell’s favorite old school liquor sign could be found. A taste test of Encanto was included and proved popular with the Irish photographer. McDonnell’s new Pisco Campo de Encanto will be in stores this month.
Thanks to Ceri Garfield for photo assistance on this shoot.

It sure is nice when you get to combine 3 of your great loves all in one day. For me that was the kind of day in July that produced another great shoot with Monocle. They were sending me to Globe Bikes in Morgan Hill near Santa Cruz to go shoot a story on the new Globe commuter line. Globe is a Specialized bike company. I’ve been riding Specialized for 15 years now so you can imagine how thrilled I was being sent off to a child’s equivalent of a candy store. It was a whirlwind of a day with a ton of shots to be done at headquarters and in town. But with bikes, images and good people on my side, I was feeling lucky.
Globe bikes are perfect for running around going to the farmers market, being a hipster in skinny or as we like to call them ‘drainpipe’ jeans with your U lock in your back pocket, going to the community garden, going to work, going to the dentist, whatever. Perfect solution to get you out of your car, release you from the dread of another late train or bus commute, help get the air cleaner and your buns and calves harder. Personally I’m the Vienna or the Roll.
The story is out in the Sept issue of Monocle which is on the newstands now. And surprisingly it looks a lot like this…

You can even read it online which is great in it’s multimedia approach to it’s online version. Here’s the splash page on the Globe piece.

Now roll along now to pick up your issue of Monocle. The cover you’re looking for looks like this.

Many thanks to everyone at Specialized who helped make my job a little easier and also to my editors Poppy in London for offering me the story and Ann Marie in New York who spent the day with me, wrote a great story and was fabulous company.
and for those of you interested in seeing some that landed on the cutting room floor..

I first heard of the Center for Biological Diversity’s work a few years ago and have watched and supported their work when I could. A month or so ago I finished reading Ed Humes book Eco Barons. A brilliant account of just some of the Americans who are using their wealth to try and save our planet from ourselves. I learned so much from this book about who, what, why and where some of the greatest environmental philanthropists and non profit organizations are putting their money, resources and energy. I was so inspired by the history of the Center for Biological Diversity and it’s campaigns that I immediately got in touch with them and told them I wanted to help in any way I could through my work.
This is not about who’s got the biggest budget in their photo department. This is about wanting to really define who you want to work with and why. And going after them. In this case it was a non profit organization. We know that sometimes they have money and sometimes they don’t. It is up to you to define how flexible you can be. And there will be times when the money is there and guess what they want your work. What I think IS important is that a couple of times a year if you can, do something first and foremost because you can give back to society and help through the use of your work and talent. It might not mean a lot to you perhaps but it means a lot to them. And ‘Pro Bono’ for all us self employed types can be a tax write off IF you’re working with a legally defined non profit and they have agreed they are accepting the work as a charitable donation.
Here is the front page of the Center for Biological Diversity’s Quarterly Newsletter for this summer. They kindly requested use of this image and they got it. I got the satisfaction of helping a cause I care about. Simple.

The CBD’s Mission Statement
“At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature — to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law, and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters, and climate that species need to survive.
We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.”
